HELLO FROM MRS. STOCKWELL!
As your Attendance Clerk at Deepwater Junior High, I
am the person your son or daughter should see anytime he or she arrives
late to school, leaves classes early, or has been absent from school
for any part of the school day. I will manage your child’s attendance
records and will work together with you, the parent or guardian, to
keep those records in good standing. The following information will
help you understand the rules that help a student maintain a good
attendance record.
STUDENT TARDINESS
If your student will be arriving late to
school, please call the Attendance Office before
the first class of the day stating the reason for the tardiness and
the expected time of arrival. When the student arrives, I will give
him or her a pass of excused tardy or unexcused
tardy based on the reason for the late arrival. The
only reasons accepted for an excused tardy
are as follows: medical or dental appointment, court date, personal
illness, and some personal business will be considered. Students will
receive an unexcused tardy for the following
reasons: missed bus or other means of transportation, car trouble,
doing homework, babysitting sibling(s), and any reason not acceptable
to the Administration of Deepwater Junior High. If you cannot call,
you must send a note with the student explaining the reason for the
late arrival. Without a note or call from you, the student will be
given an unexcused tardy for the day.
Example of a note from parent for a student tardiness:
John Ray Smith is late to school today,
because of personal illness.

STUDENT ABSENCES
If your student will be absent from school, please call
me at the beginning of the school day(s) on which your child will
not be coming to school. Please note: If I have not
heard from you, the parent or guardian, I am required to call you
at your home or office to verify the reason for your child’s
absence from school. If I am unable to contact you, your child will
be considered truant until I have received
some form of contact from the parent/guardian. When the student returns
to school, he or she must bring a note to the Attendance Office
which has been signed by you and which states the reason for the absence(s).
A student will be given an unexcused absence
without a note from the parent as well as for being absent for reasons
other than medical, dental, court appointments, personal illness,
and death in the immediate family. In the event of a death, Funeral
Home associates will provide documentation for a student who is absent
to attend funeral services. If your child has 2 or more unexcused
absences on record, your child will be considered truant
on those days. Therefore, you will receive a Court Warning
informing you of the school attendance laws of the State of Texas
and the consequences to parents and students for such absences. Additional
note: A student cannot be excused for absence from school
for the purpose of staying home to take care of a sibling or other
individual.
Example of a note from parent for a student absence:
John Ray Smith was absent May 1,2, and 3, 2004,
because of personal illness.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL
DAY
If your student must leave school during
the school day for a scheduled appointment (doctor,
dentist, court date, personal business, etc.), please call the Attendance
Office or send a note with the student that morning which states
the reason and the time for the student to leave class. The note must
be signed by you, the parent or guardian. The student should bring
the note to my office before reporting to the first class of the day.
There he or she will be given a permission slip to leave at the appropriate
time to meet you in the front office where you will sign the student
out. In this way, we will not have to interrupt class to get your
student. If the student returns to classes on the same day, he or
she must report to the Attendance Office to obtain an
excused absence pass for admission back into class.
If your child becomes ill during the day,
and wants to go home, the student must go the Clinic, where
the nurse will contact the parent to obtain permission for the student
to leave. At no time must the student call from any telephone to have
someone to pick him or her up from school until he or she has seen
the school nurse, Mrs. Michael, or has received permission from the
office to call someone. Any student leaving school for any reason
must be signed out in the Attendance Office before leaving.
CONTACTING STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM
Please do not call the school to speak to
your student or to give him or her a message unless
it is something that absolutely cannot wait until after school. The
only way to give a message to a student is to interrupt a class. State
law requires that we do not interrupt a class unless it is an emergency.
For more specific information about school attendance
rules and requirements by the state of Texas, as well as, any particular
guidelines by the Deer Park Independent School District, please refer
to the Student Handbook, which has been provided to each
student.
Welcome to Deepwater Junior High School! I am looking
forward to another good year as your Attendance Clerk.
