Introduction

Pirates have been around since boats and trading came into existence, and pirating still continues into our modern time. The Vikings were considered one of the first groups of pirates, but there have been Greek, Chinese, Roman, as well women pirates.

Task

Through research, students will study about different pirates, their role in history, how they operated, where they operated, the ships they used and their weaponry.

Students will share their findings using different formats of multimedia, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Inspiration and web pages.

Process

1. Research

You will be assigned to teams. From the following list, choose two pirates to research. Click on their name and you should be linked to a page with questions and web sites to help you in your investigation. Take notes and remember to include the URL where you found information.

After all information has been found, type up the questions and your answers using Microsoft Word. Include a reference area at the bottom of your document of the web sites you collected data.

2. Pirate Flag

As a group, choose a type of pirate ship, name the ship and create a pirate flag, using Inspiration.

3. Code of Conduct

Most pirates had a Code of Conduct for their crew. As a group, create a Code of Conduct, using Microsoft Word.

4. Pirate's Diary

Each student will create a diary of a voyage of seven days. Dates, daily weather and sea conditions should be included, as well as some incident or the routine business of the trip. Students may use PowerPoint to create their diary.

5. Pirate Newsletter

The groups will collaborate their research and projects to create a pirate newsletter, using Publisher.

6. Web page

Students will choose the best information from their projects to be added to the class web page.

Conclusion

Through internet research, students have learned about different pirates, their role in history, how they operated, where they operated, the ships they used and their weaponry.

Using different multimedia, students have been able to share their findings using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Inspiration and web pages.

6.22.C Reading/viewing/representing/interpretation:: TS will use media to compare ideas and points of view.
6.23.B-D Reading/viewing/representing/analysis: TS will analyze and critique visual images, messages, and meanings.

6.15.D Writing: TS will write to entertain such as to compose humorous poems or short stories.
6.15.F Writing: TS will choose the appropriate form for his/her own purpose for writing, including journals, letters,editorials, reviews, poems, presentations, narratives, reports, and instructions.
6.15.G Writing: TS will use literary devices effectively such as suspense, dialogue, and figurative language.
6.16.A-G Writing: TS composes original texts, applying the conventions of written language such as capitalization, punctuation, penmanship and spelling to communicate clearly.
6.17.A-I Writing: TS applies standard grammar and usage to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
6.18.A-I Writing: TS selects and uses writing processes for self initiated and assigned writing
6.24.A-C Viewing/Representing: TS produces visual images, messages, and meanings that communicate with others.
