Assignment 3-C

Behaviorism is based on behavior that can be observed and measured (Good & Brophy, 1990).  Thought processes are not considered.  Learning is a response acquisition.

Cognitivism is new information compared to existing knowledge and may be combined to accommodate new information.  In other words, new information is built on existing structures.  Learning is a knowledge acquisition.

Constructivism is, according to Merrill, knowledge constructed from experience.  Learning is a personal interpretation of the world and an active process in which meaning is developed on experience.  Learning is interpretative and emergent; teaching is assisted performance.

Personally, I was taught with a behaviorist philosophy.  If we learned the objectives that were taught, we would be rewarded.  If we didn’t learned them, we were punished.  I like to think of myself as a constructivist.  I like to give my students the opportunity of choice.  I also prefer projects as a way of learning rather than relying on textbooks.
