Public Information Requests

The Texas Public Information Act gives members of the public a right of access to government records. While most existing documents are considered open records, the law provides specific exceptions that may apply to the disclosure of information in some cases. The act also outlines procedures for making an open records request and how governmental bodies should respond to such requests.

Procedures to Obtain Information:

  1. Submit a written request (mail, fax, email or in person) according to a governmental body's reasonable procedures [see below].
  2. Include enough description and detail about the information requested to enable the governmental body to accurately identify and locate the items requested.
  3. Cooperate with the governmental body's reasonable efforts to clarify the type or amount of information requested
