What pre-school programs does the district offer for students with limited income and limited English skills?

Registration for students qualifying for enrollment in the district’s pre-kindergarten program will begin at 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. beginning Aug. 11 at the Early Childhood Center cafeteria.

All pre-kindergarten programs will be housed at Early Childhood Center.

To qualify for the program, a child must be:

  • four years old on or before Sept. 1; and
  • have a limited ability to speak and/or understand English; or
  • come from a family with economic need.

Pre-k eligibility has been extended to children who have a parent in active military duty or have a parent that has been injured or killed as a result of active military duty.

To complete registration, parents must bring the following items on the day of registration:

  • Child’s Social Security card
  • Child’s immunization record

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, not hospital copy
  • Proof of income, if qualifying by income
  • Student must be tested during registration if qualifying by limited English ability

The pre-kindergarten curriculum focuses on the development of oral Language and reading readiness skills which serve as a foundation for future academic success. The program is operated on a half-day basis. The State Legislature determines the guidelines for admission into the pre-kindergarten program. When any Texas school district has 16 or more children who are identified as limited English proficient or as a member of a low-income family (qualifying for free/reduced lunch), that district is required by state law to offer a pre-kindergarten program to those identified students. The State of Texas does not provide for free public pre-kindergarten beyond these two categories of students. Further questions can be directed to the Early Childhood Center at 832‑668‑8390.
