2008-2009 FAQ

Message from the Superintendent

Opportunities for success. That’s the bottom line. My job, as superintendent, is to make sure that our students have as many opportunities for success as we can possibly provide. I want our students to excel in performance halls, on playing fields, in tournaments, and, most of all, in the classroom.

Our students see their teachers each day, and they probably see office employees, administrators, and cafeteria employees as well. But, behind the scenes, there are hundreds of others whose work contributes to each student’s success, both directly and indirectly.

These employees work tirelessly to guide our students and district through the many changes and challenges we face each year. Perhaps the biggest change facing our district in the 2008-09 school year is the new time schedule for our schools. As you probably already know, elementary classes will begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 2:45 p.m., and junior high classes will begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. The high school schedule was changed significantly, with classes beginning at 8:45 a.m. and ending at 3:45 p.m. This later start for high school allows the addition of a flex period before and after school. Students will be able to earn extra credits, freeing up time during the regular school day for more electives or other classes. Also, specific classes will be offered during the flex periods for students to recover credits they lost due to a failed class.

This new schedule provides more opportunities for high school students to experience success as they work to meet increased state graduation requirements. Beginning with the class of 2011 [students attending 10th grade in 2008-09], graduates must pass four years of each of the four core subject areas: English, mathematics, social studies, and science. [For more information about the new schedule, go to www.dpisd.org/HSstart or contact your child’s high school office.] In other words, it is more difficult than ever before for a student to earn a diploma, but our new schedule will make it easier by providing more options for students.

In closing, I want to congratulate our students, parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff on last year’s achievements. In our line of work, once we receive the latest state testing results, we tend to immediately look at our returning students and begin planning how we can best serve their needs in the coming school year. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the best educators in the state! But it’s also important to appreciate our successes. Months of diligent work don’t just boil down to a week’s worth of tests…the challenges that our students overcame during the 2007-08 school year form the foundation for next year’s successes.

We look at the numbers on the chart next to this column, and we see children. Some of them exceeded expectations, others overcame considerable odds, and others need more help. But they all receive the same from Team Deer Park: our very best.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2008-09 school year, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Arnold Adair
Superintendent of Schools
