Best Practices at FJH

Teacher Buddies: Each adult in the building has one or two students who they try to build relationships with during the school year.

VIP’s: Viking Instructional Pals: Stronger students who are chosen to work with weaker academic students during the school year. They help the academically and socially. They check on grades, meet with teachers, help at tutorials and even call parents sometime.

CSI’s: Creating Success Interns. Our Algebra, Geometry and Advanced LA students who are chosen to tutor students who have failed right before TAKS. They are chosen when they have not been successful on TAKS in the past or current Benchmarks. We pull them from their electives every other day starting right after Spring Break until TAKS testing (usually about 10 days total) The CSI’s are trained by Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Cazanas, Mrs. Lewis and Mr. Meyer. We have to certified Teachers to monitor them in the Lab, One for Math and one

For LA.

LEP Pull out program with Alana Moser. Language Folder games for each academic area. Use First Books for things that happen US History. Multi sensory grammar, used colors with various parts of speech.

Math Camp: Begins in Feb through first of April each Tues. Students stay after school to do Hands on activities over Major Math TEKS. Mrs. Lewis and the Math Dept take turns designing lesson and monitoring groups. All 3-grade levels attend.

Blooming Vikings: Our gardening club headed by our Nurse Zohlen. They have designed a garden at our school; they tend it, harvest the vegetables and take nature field trips during the school year.

Students of the Month: Each month is represented by a different concept, like honesty or loyalty, etc. We choose one girl and one boy from each grade level that exemplify that attribute. We display their pictures in the pods and on a board in Cafeteria. Then we invite them and their parents to the PTO where Shell Oil Co. who is our sponsor of the program gives them a certificate and gift card to Barnes and Noble.
