1965-66 DP Football Teams

"The 1965-66 team was the best I've had the opportunity to witness.  The team finished the season 8-1-1.  Their only loss came at the hands of Channelview on a rainy, muddy night by the score of 6-0.  Channelview managed two field goals.  The tie came against Dickinson 14-14.  This game featured two all-state running backs, Sonny Heckendorn from Dickinson and Ronnie Weeks from Deer Park.  Ronnie rushed for well over 2000 yards that season in just ten games.  To this day he remains the best high school running back I have every witnessed.  Ronnie was 5'10" and about 170, and as fast as the speed of light. Deer Park was a AAA school then and AAAA was the highest level at the time.  The Deer defeated two AAAA teams this season-- one, San Jacinto by the score of 41-6.  San Jacinto failed to cover the opening kickoff in the end zone and the Deer recovered the ball making the score 7-0 with no time yet expired on the clock.  The Deer out scored their opponents 215-67 for the season.  The Deer had eleven players make All-District/six on first team.  First team selections were Bill Kilgore, Blan Patterson, Ronnie Weeks, Kenny Kachel, Henry Buchanan, and Jimmy Stewart.  Other key players were David Wheat, Phil Lovorn, Glen Brown, Steven Robinson and Curtis McDonald."
