May 27, 2008
Dear Parents,
The school year and our off-season program have just drawn to a close. We are very excited about the progress that our players and our program have made this year. Coming off a successful 2007 season, we have focused on not becoming complacent, but instead, striving to have a great work ethic. The motto that our team has adopted for the 2008 season is “Unfinished Business.” We feel that there are many areas that we can improve, therefore we have taken this motto to remind us that our work in not yet complete. This group of young men has worked extremely hard to continue to improve and reach for higher goals. This is a tribute to them and their upbringing. Each year, we try to sell our players that winning is not based on a team’s style of offense or defense, but rather a team wins with good character, unity, attitude and work ethic. We feel that our players exemplify this and that the 2008 Deer will be a football team that we will all be proud of.
With spring training now behind us, our expectations for next season are higher than ever. It is important for teams to set high goals and we have certainly done just that. We have, Winning a District Championship and Playing over Thanksgiving as the cornerstones of our goals for the 2008 season. If these goals are to be reached, our players must commit to have a great summer work ethic. The Summer Training Program (STP) will again be a real boost for our program. With our own coaches being allowed to run the STP, we feel we can get this program and its players ready to achieve these goals. Most of our players are already enrolled in STP. If you have not yet enrolled your son and would like to do so, there is still time. We have forms at the South Campus Athletic office and on the football website. The program begins on June 9th. Any help or encouragement that you can give us in getting our players here is appreciated.
We will have our first squad meeting for next season on Wednesday, August 6th at 5:30 pm at the South Campus. Our fall practices will begin on Monday, August 11th. School will not begin until Monday, August 25th, so we will have one week of two-a-day practices for our upper classmen. Our freshmen to be will practice once per day. You will receive notification later in the summer as to the times these workouts will begin. Our upperclassmen will practice in the mornings for the week of August 11th. Our incoming freshmen will practice the evenings during that same week. Our first varsity game is on Saturday, August 30th. As you can see, we will not have a lot of time to prepare. We will need every player at every practice. It is greatly appreciated if dental appointments, doctor’s appointments, etc. can be scheduled at times other than practice times. I realize that this is inconvenient at times, but we plan every practice counting on all of our players being present. If your son does have to miss a practice for any reason, we would like for him to call my office or their position coach and let us know. This helps him learn to be accountable. The athletic office phone number is 832 668-7247 and there is an answering machine at this number.
If your son is entering the 9th or 11th grade, he will need a physical in order to participate in football next fall. Please make arrangements to get these done as soon as possible so that we do not loose any preparation time in August. If he does not require a physical, he should have already turned in his paperwork to Jim Davidson in the trainer’s office.
I really appreciate your support of your son and the football program. I am very proud of all of our players and the progress they have made. Please make sure to ask your son about his end of year evaluation he received from his position coach. This evaluation is designed to let him know exactly where he stands if the season started today. It will also give you results of your son’s off-season testing. It has been great to see how far they have all come since January. I hope you all have a great summer. Feel free to call or come by if I can help you in any way.
Sincerely
Coach Massey
