2017-18 District Calendar 2016-17 District Calendar
For the first time in more than 10 years, the calendar includes several changes over the previous calendars due to a new law that gives local districts more control over their calendars. The most significant change is that the 2016-17 school year will end for students before Memorial Day, which is something that parents and employees have requested for years. Under the new law, the school year is now measured in minutes instead of days. Students must have at least 75,600 minutes of instruction compared to the previous requirement of 180 days.
DPISD’s calendar extends the school day for students by adding 15 minutes to the end of the day, which shortens the student calendar by four days. Those four days---Jan. 2, May 30, May 31, and June 1---are now listed as teacher inservice days. With that change, the calendar meets a frequent parent and teacher request that each semester start with a short week of instruction. It also includes enough extra minutes to cover up to two days of school cancelations in the event of inclement weather. The 2016-17 calendar draft also includes the following changes:
- Made the previous half-instructional-days on Dec. 16 and May 25 full instructional day
- Made May 26 the last day of school
- Made May 26 graduation
- Listed Jan. 2 and Feb. 20 as the bad weather make-up days at the bottom of the page
