San Jacinto Elementary school seal

Deer Park ISD’s schools and Child Nutrition Department are celebrating Farm Fresh Fridays this month!  We are serving a different fresh fruit or vegetable from a local Texas farm.  The state launched the Farm Fresh Initiative to focus on creating meaningful connections between Texas farmers, ranchers, schools, childcare providers, and local communities.

Today, San Jacinto Elementary and DPISD schools are highlighting Honeycrisp Apples grown at Top of Texas Apples in Farwell. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants and dietary fiber. The nutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Did you know there are approximately 7,500 varieties of apples worldwide?

Later this month, schools will focus on bicolored corn from J & B Farms in Pearsall, mushrooms from Kitchen Pride Farm in Gonzales, and grapefruit from Edinburg Citrus in Edinburg.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, we also purchase milk from Borden and bread from Kurz & Co., both of which are produced in Texas.
