The Deer Park ISD Board of Trustees recently recognized several students and student groups for their outstanding accomplishments!
DEER PARK HIGH SCHOOL FFA
Trustees congratulated students from the Deer Park High School FFA who participated and placed at auction in the 2019 Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo. Deer Park students earned seven Champions, five Reserve Champions, three Grand Showmanship awards, four Reserve Showmanship awards, and one Herdsman award. The live auction total for FFA students exhibiting livestock and floral projects for all school districts was $299,000. Deer Park students accounted for $177,100 in sales, which is a little less than 60 percent of the auction total.
DPISD CHRISTMAS CARD ARTIST
Each year, DPISD features a student's artwork on its Christmas card. This year, students from our high schools submitted artwork. The artwork of Bianca Curry-Naguit, an eleventh-grade student at Deer Park High School – South Campus, was chosen for the card. Her teacher, Kate Harrel, and principal, Steve Corry, joined Bianca at the meeting.
DEER PARK HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND
Congratulations to the members and directors of the DPHS Marching Band and Color Guard for earning a first division rating at the Region 19 UIL Marching Contest on Oct. 19. Drum majors Ashley Abrego, Kaylah Rahman, and Rose Singh represented the band at the meeting. They were joined by band directors, Gary Hebert, Gene Cumpian and Paul Parkan.
DPHS TEAM TENNIS
Congratulations to Deer Park High School Team Tennis for completing the 2019 season as undefeated District Champions and Regional Semi-Finalists for the first time in school history. Representing the team were Chloe Gibson, Tanner Haltom (Player of the Year for District 21-6A), Nathan Nesmith, Lindsey Stafford, and Dean Zuniga-Montemayor. Coach Tommy Heim and assistant coach Kevin McElroy joined the group. Heim was also recognized for being named the 6A Coach of the Year for Region 3 by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. He was one of the four finalists for 6A Coach of the Year for the state.
Fairmont Elementary students Ceanna Bennett, Brady Wright, and Isaac Montemayor led the opening exercises at the October meeting of the School Board. Fairmont Elementary Principal Lea Ann Boswell introduced the students.
For the November Board meeting, Deer Park High School Junior ROTC members Justinian Markley, Quentin Friery, and Haley Graham led the opening exercises. They were joined by ROTC Instructor Sgt. Major Greg Valcin.



Parkwood Elementary students in Alina Moreno’s first-grade Dual Language class and San Juana Garcia’s kindergarten class celebrated Día de los Muertos yesterday. The children spent the day learning about the wonderful traditions behind this Hispanic holiday. Students dressed in Día de los Muertos attire and experienced traditional Mexican foods and drinks such as tamales, pan dulce, agua de Jamaica, and horchata.
