SHELL SCIENCE LAB REGIONAL CHALLENGE
Three Deer Park ISD science teachers were named regional winners in the Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge. This program provides funding for a school science lab makeover to winners who have found innovative ways to deliver quality lab experiences with limited school and laboratory resources.
The challenge is sponsored by Shell Oil Company and administered by the National Science Teachers Association. San Jacinto Elementary teacher Jennifer Coughran received $10,000, Deepwater Junior High teacher Jayme Richey received $10,000, and Deer Park High School-South Campus teacher Arbia Khalil received $15,000.
STUDENT SILENT SERVANT AWARD
Earlier this year, DPHS-South Campus student Ryley Stuttz provided 24 backpacks containing school supplies for DPHS-North Campus and DPHS-South Campus, which he paid for out of his own pocket. When asked why he did it, Ryley said that he wanted to do something nice for others during “all of this horrible stuff going on in the world.” DPHS-SC Assistant Principal Kim Edwards submitted Riley’s name to the Peter Marsh Foundation for consideration of its Student Silent Servant Award, and he won. Ryley received a plaque and a $500 check.
The Peter R. Marsh Foundation recognizes students who unselfishly provide voluntary service in their communities, possess above average social/emotional intelligence, are more empathetic towards others, live more-peaceful lives, achieve greater-than-average academic success, graduate high school and typically attend college. In adult life these students often become competent parents and valuable members of their communities.
