Carpenter Elementary’s students and staff celebrated Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Western Heritage and Rodeo Day last week. HLSR representatives hosted activities about a variety of topics, including western culture, Sam Houston, chuck wagons, vaqueros, and more.
According to Carpenter teacher Dana Rainer, who coordinates the event, which has been a school tradition since 2004. “We tie Rodeo Day to the curriculum in social studies with westward expansion in Texas history and ranching and farming,” she explained. “It also provides other real world experiences (rodeo), social skills (manners and dancing etiquette), and a chance for students to talk about what they heard and have some fun.”
Rainer said the students enjoyed interacting with the guest speakers. “They played some games, role played, and practiced dancing as well as learned about people, transportation, farm to food, and the HLSR,” she said.
