COVID-19 Update - March 16, 2020
Deer Park ISD is canceling school for all students through April 10. All school-related student events and activities are also canceled for the same time period. A majority of districts in the greater Houston area are following a similar cancellation based on a recommendation from county health officials.
WHY IS ANOTHER CANCELATION NEEDED?
According to health experts, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases is expected to grow significantly. Based on the 14-day incubation period of the virus plus the time it takes for symptoms to show, health officials say that anything less than a four-week cancelation won’t have a meaningful impact on the spread of the virus. They also state that schools play an important role in slowing the growth of the virus.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?
Districts will consult with health officials during the week of April 6 to determine if another cancelation is needed.
It is important to note that in-person instruction is canceled, but the District’s instructional staff members are working hard on a plan for at-home instruction for students. We will share information about that plan by the end of the week.
STAAR TESTING CANCELED
Earlier today, the commissioner of education announced that STAAR testing has been canceled for the current school year.
In DPISD, we work hard to create a welcoming environment for our students and community, and we know all too well that, for many children, school is a source of comfort and joy. Even though our teachers and team members aren’t currently able to work with students in person, we are developing creative ways to continue the instructional relationships we value so much.
We will share more details this week as they become available.
