Deer Park ISD is excited to announce the start of the largest project included in the District’s successful 2022 Bond Election: the addition of a Career and Technical Education wing at Deer Park High School-South Campus. The project will change traffic and parking patterns at the campus beginning on Monday, July 24.
The District’s construction contractor will establish an equipment laydown yard in the visitor parking lot of Abshier Stadium and a construction fence around the southeast section of the campus. The fence will restrict access to an area that stretches from the auxiliary gym past the former site of the school softball field. Deer Drive, which runs from West San Augustine past the tennis courts to the Abshier visitor parking lot, will be closed to through-traffic for the duration of the construction project. This means students and employees will not be able to access the campus using the entrance by the tennis courts (the Athletics Department parking lot located at the east end of South Campus will be open).
“We know that this situation isn’t ideal, but these changes are required for the construction project,” DPHS-SC Principal Kirk Taylor said. “We are communicating this news to students and parents now so that everyone has plenty of time to adjust. I’m confident that we can all do our part to help the plan succeed, and in a little over a year, we will have a new CTE wing to enjoy for decades to come.”
Under the construction plan, some students and employees will have to park in different areas of the Abshier parking lot. Bus drop-off and pick-up will also be impacted, with most buses stopping near the cafeteria and some stopping at the front entrance of the school.
More details about parking assignments and buses will be provided to students in the coming weeks.
The new wing will house several CTE programs, including health science, cosmetology and barbering, photography, electrical, plumbing, engineering, and more. Thousands of students---about 75 percent of high schoolers---are enrolled in at least one CTE class.
