Course Description

English I includes the study of literary elements through the reading of a variety of genres with common themes, including novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction. Special emphasis is placed on the study of vocabulary from the works read. Grammar will be studied with application to the writing process. Students will write in numerous modes with special attention given to expository essays in preparation for the state STAAR/EOC exam. All required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) will be covered in depth.

 

Course Objectives

In accordance with the TEKS and CCRS, students enrolled in English I continue to increase and refine their communication skills and are expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis, in addition to writing in a timed situation. An emphasis is placed on logical arguments with clear supporting evidence. Students read in multiple genres and learn literary forms and terms associated with selections being read. Students learn to interpret the influences of the historical context of a literary work.

 

Grading System

Nine weeks grades will be calculated as follows:

40% Minor Assignments

Any in class assignments, pop quizzes, short homework assignments, and participation

Quizzes and/or Higher-Level Critical Thinking Assignments, Response Journals, CBAs

 

60% Major Assignments

Tests, Projects, Presentations, Process/Timed Compositions

 

Retesting Policy

Students who test below a 70 have five school days to retest for up to a 70. Regardless of the original grade, all written assignments may be revised for up to a 100.

 

Make Up Work

Absent students must ask for their makeup work upon their return. All make-up work is due no later than five days after their return. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time to make up any missed tests or quizzes.

 

Tutorials

Tutorials are available Monday-Thursday after school in the Student Success Center (or virtually). Tutorials are also available before school with your teacher by appointment.

 

Extra Credit Policy:

Extra credit can be earned towards your nine weeks average.  You may take advantage of extra credit opportunities if you meet the following prerequisite: a student must have no zeroes in the gradebook (e.g. all assignments turned in) at the time of request.

 

Students will be given two opportunities (one reading assignment and one writing assignment) worth up to 5 points each.  Points earned will be added to their lowest minor grade (except CBAs).

 

Class Policies

All school rules and policies will be enforced. Late work will have points deducted for every day it is late.

Students are encouraged to seek extra help when needed. Parents and guardians are welcome to call, email, or schedule conferences when concerns arise. Together we can make it a great year!
