Benefits Information

Medical Insurance:

The district’s medical plans are offered through TRS ActiveCare - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Employees may select coverage from one of three plans. The employee’s monthly premium depends on the plans he/she selects. The district currently contributes $325.00 per month for each employee’s health plan.

The three (3) medical plans offered through TRS ActiveCare – BCBSTX are listed below. All plans provide coverage for the employee and family.

Cobra:

Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act you have the right to continue your group health coverage such as medical, dental and vision for a limited period of time. Temporary continuation of coverage generally last 18 months after terminating employment with the district.

Dental Insurance:

Ameritas offers three (3) dental plans options, Base, PPO LOW or PPO HIGH. All of which offer in and out of network coverage. The PPO HIGH plan offers Orthodontia coverage for children under the age of 18 only.

Vision Insurance:

Our vision plan provides a once a year benefit. This means that our employees can use the vision benefit once a plan year instead of waiting 12 months between each use. Ameritas (VSP) is the carrier for vision benefits.

Disability:

These plans are designed to replace lost income due to a disabling illness or injury.

Long Term Disability - The district provides eligible employees with long term disability at no cost to the employee.

Short Term Disability - Employees may purchase short term disability for themselves for additional coverage.

Accident Insurance:

Aflac Group Accident insurance provides a benefit for costs associated with accidental injuries. Benefits are paid directly to you to be used however you see fit.

Cancer Insurance:

American Fidelity Cancer insurance Helps cover expenses for the treatment of cancer, transportation, hospitalization, and more. Benefits are paid directly to you to be used however you see fit.

Critical Illness:

Our Aflac Critical Illness can help with the treatment costs of covered illnesses. Benefits are paid directly to you, unless otherwise assigned.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance:

Aflac Hospital Indemnity Insurance provides hospital admission benefits when an insured is admitted to a hospital and confined as an inpatient because of a covered accidental injury or covered sickness. Benefits will not be paid for confinement to an observation unit, or for emergency room treatment or outpatient treatment.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment:

AD&D plan pay an additional benefit when a covered insured loses their life, or a limb due to an accident.

Basic Group Life Insurance:

The district provides eligible employees with $25,000 in life insurance.

Additional Life Insurance:

Employees may purchase additional life insurance for themselves and / or their dependents.

BCBSTX Supplemental Group Term life - Offers coverage in increments of $10,000, no to exceed five (5) times your annual earnings. This is not a portable life insurance.

Texas Life Insurance – Unlike group term life insurance, Texas life is a permanent life insurance that you can take with you when you change jobs or retire.

Health FSA:

A Flexible Spending Account is an IRS-approved program to help you save taxes and reimburse yourself for out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered under your medical plan. The maximum contribution is $3,050 for 2023.

Dependent Care FSA:

With a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account, you can set aside part of your pay on a pre-tax basis to pay for eligible dependent care expenses like child care and adult day care. Eligible dependents must be claimed as an exemption on your tax return. The 2023 dependent care contribution limits are as follows:

  • $5,000 for single taxpayers and married couples filing jointly
  • $2,500 for married individuals filing separately

Health Savings Account (HSA):

A Health Savings Account is a great way to help you control your healthcare costs. It works in conjunction with a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (TRS ActiveCare HD) to combine tax-free savings earmarked for qualified medical expenses. Your HSA balances roll over from year to year and earn interest along the way.

Medical Transport:

With Medical Transport protection, you will have zero out-of-pocket expenses for any emergency air or ground transport from anywhere in the United States, regardless of who transports you.
