STUDENT TRAINER JOB DESCRIPTION

Athletic Training can be a very rewarding field.  As a student athletic trainer, you will be part of a team that is responsible for the well-being of the athletes at Deer Park High School.  You will learn how to administer first aid, how to apply preventative taping, and how to rehabilitate our student athletes after injury.  Because of this, you will be a very important person not only to the individual athlete, but also to the overall success of our athletic teams.

YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

It is important to note that Athletic Training is not a club; it is a JOB!  You will have responsibilities and be held accountable for them.  You will be an important part of the team!  This is why we must have responsible people to work as student trainers.  The athletes, coaches, and staff Athletic Trainers must be able to count on you to be there when needed.

SCHOOL:  Your academics are more important than anything else you do at school.  You can to take your iPad or books to practice and on bus trips so that you may do your homework.  It is encouraged to work on homework when there is any down time prior to practices or games.  You will have time for tutoring, re-taking tests, and other measures needed to maintain your grades.  However, you should attempt to schedule these events during non-practice times.  You will be required to let the staff Athletic Trainers know in advance should you need off for school related work.

ELIGIBILITY:  All student trainers are required to maintain UIL academic eligibility just as all student athletes.

HOLIDAYS:  Just as with the athletes, if your team is practicing during the holidays, we expect you to be on duty as well.  Points off your grade may result because of missing a practice or a game during the holidays.

CHURCH:  We realize the importance of church, and Athletic Training should not interfere with normal church activities.  There will be no work on Sunday, and practices on Wednesday should end in time for you to attend church.  There may be an occasional game rescheduled for Wednesday, which would interfere with you going to church that night.  In addition, church activities scheduled on nights other than Sunday and Wednesday may conflict with your Athletic Training schedule.  We expect you to work your games on these nights unless someone can cover the games for you.

SUMMER VACATION:  Student trainers for the 2023-2024 year will report to duty on July 24, 2023.  Summer vacations should end before this time.  We utilize this time to review the Student Athletic Handbook and Athletic Code of Conduct, certify all student trainers in First Aid, CPR and AED use.  We also use this time to prepare for the football season and the school year.

ALL STUDENT Trainers are required to work Football and A SECOND sport.

FOOTBALL:  ALL football practices and home games, including freshman football, are at the South campus.  Freshman football athletics is before school and 1st period.  Non-freshman football athletic period is 7th period.  Freshman trainers and players report to South campus then take the shuttle busses from South to North for the rest of the school day.

SECOND SPORT ASSIGNMENTS:  After football season, each trainer is required to work a second sport.  Second sport practice and game times vary, but typically have shorter practice times with most having games on Tuesday and Friday evenings.  Second sports include basketball, soccer, softball, and baseball.  We have various teams to cover such as varsity, JV, sophomore, and up to two freshman teams in these sports.  This allows you to work with a specific team and be responsible for the care of that team.

FOOBALL SEASON WORK WEEK:  We divide our freshman staff into a Team A and Team B that rotates weekly.

A typical work week for Freshmen during football season (for example purposes only - subject to change):

As stated in this Student Trainer Job Description, there is a lot of hard work, long hours, and responsibility that comes with being an Athletic Trainer.  You will have to do some “grunge” work and give up some of your free time.  You will have to learn and be able to manage your time efficiently between academics, athletics, and other aspects of your life, such as church and family.  However, Athletic Training is also a very fun and rewarding organization.  You will be an integral part of a sports team.  You will gain friendships both on the Athletic Training staff and with the athletes.  It allows you to be a big part of Deer Park High School.  You will learn about sports medicine, which you can use later in life.  You may have an opportunity to continue as an Athletic Trainer in college, possibly on a scholarship.  Moreover, you will be able to participate in fellowship activities with your fellow student trainers.  We feel that it is truly an opportunity to enrich your High School experience.

Therefore, if you feel you would like to be a student athletic trainer, simply fill out the attached application, be sure to include the required names and emails of your three references, and complete your hand written essay on the page provided.  Be sure you review this with your parent and get your parent’s approval to apply to our program.
