Student Trainer Program

STUDENT TRAINER JOB DESCRIPTION
Athletic Training can be a very rewarding field. As a Student Athletic Trainer, you will be part of the Sports Medicine team responsible for the well-being of the student-athletes at Deer Park High School. You will learn how to administer first aid, apply preventative taping, and assist in the rehabilitation of student-athletes after injury. Because of this, you will play a very important role not only to the health of individual athletes but also in the overall success of our athletic teams.

It is important to note that Athletic Training is not a club; it is a JOB! You will have responsibilities and be held accountable for them. You are an important part of the team, which is why we need dependable and responsible individuals to serve as Student Athletic Trainers. The athletes, coaches, and staff Athletic Trainers must be able to count on you to be there when needed.
- SCHOOL: Your academics are more important than anything else you do at school. You are encouraged to bring your iPad or books to practice and on bus trips so that you may complete your homework. Use any available downtime before practices or games to work on assignments. You will have time for tutoring, retesting, and other measures needed to maintain your grades; however, you should make every attempt to schedule these events during non-practice times. If you need time off for school-related work, you must notify the staff Athletic Trainers in advance.
- ELIGIBILITY: All student trainers are required to maintain UIL academic eligibility, just as all student-athletes do.
- HOLIDAYS: Just as with the athletes, if your team is practicing during the holidays, you are expected to be on duty as well. Points may be deducted from your grade for missing a practice or a game during the holidays.
- CHURCH: We realize the importance of church, and Athletic Training should not interfere with normal church activities. There will be no work on Sundays, and Wednesdays practices should end in time for you to attend church. Occasionally a game rescheduled for Wednesday, which would conflict with church attendance. Additionally, church activities scheduled on days other than Sunday and Wednesday may overlap with your Athletic Training responsibilities. You are expected to work your assigned games on these nights unless prior arrangements are made for coverage.
- SUMMER VACATION: Student Athletic Trainers for the 2026-2027 school year will report for duty on July 27, 2026. Summer vacations should conclude before this date. Each year we hold a Student Trainer Camp to review the Student Athletic Handbook and Athletic Code of Conduct, and to certify all Student Athletic Trainers in First Aid, CPR and AED use. The camp also helps prepare for the football season and the school year.
ALL STUDENT Trainers are required to work Football and A SECOND sport.
- FOOTBALL: ALL football practices and home games, including freshman football, are at the South Campus. Freshman football athletics takes place before school and 1st period, while non-freshman football athletic period are 7th period. Freshman Student Athletic Trainers and players report to South Campus, then take the shuttle busses from South to North for the remainder of the school day. Only the freshmen Student Athletic Trainers assigned to varsity practice will return to the South Campus after school.
- SECOND SPORT ASSIGNMENTS: After football season, each Student Athletic Trainer is required to work a second sport. Practice and game times for second sports vary but are generally shorter, with most games on Tuesdays and Fridays or Wednesdays and Saturdays. Second sports include basketball, soccer, softball, and baseball. We cover multiple teams at various levels, such as varsity, JV, sophomore, and up to two freshman teams. This structure allows you to work with a specific team and take responsibility for that team's care.
FOOBALL SEASON WORK WEEK: We divide our freshman staff into Team A and Team B, which rotate on a weekly basis.

DAYS OFF: If staff size permits, upperclassmen will receive one day off a week, either a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. On your off day, you are responsible completing the daily training room duties before dismissal, which is approximately 4:45pm.
As stated in this Student Athletic Trainer Job Description, being a Student Athletic Trainer requires hard work, long hours, and a great deal of responsibility. You will have to do some “grunge” work and give up some of your free time. You will need to learn to manage your time efficiently between academics, athletics, and other aspects of your life, such as church and family. However, Athletic Training is also a very fun and rewarding experience. You will be an integral part of a sports team and will build friendships both within the Athletic Training staff and with the athletes. It allows you to play a meaningful role in Deer Park High School while learning about sports medicine and gaining knowledge you can carry with you into the future. You may even have opportunities to continue as an Athletic Trainer in college, possibly with a scholarship. In addition, you take part in fellowship activities with your fellow Student Athletic Trainers. We believe this program is truly an opportunity to enrich your high school experience.
