Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic injuries and medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.  

 

Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize an individual’s activity and participation in athletics, work, and life.  They work under the direction of physicians, as prescribed by state license statutes.

 

Athletic trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals.  The athletic training profession is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.

 

Athletic trainers practice in a variety of settings, including high schools, colleges and universities, professional sports teams, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, physicians’ offices, corporate and industrial institutions, the military, and the performing arts.  Regardless of setting, athletic trainers provide care in accordance with their education, training,  and state practice acts.
