Dual Language Program (English)

Deer Park ISD is proud to offer a dual language program, also referred to as a two-way immersion program. This program provides special language instruction that will prepare students to become bilingual and biliterate in both English and Spanish while obtaining high academic achievement in both languages. Dual Language education integrates native English speaking and native Spanish speaking students in the same classroom. Students develop oral and cognitive academic language in both English and Spanish while mastering grade level knowledge and skills in all elementary content areas. Our program is based on a 50/50 model, in which 50% of the instruction is delivered in English and the other 50% is delivered in Spanish. The program is designed to teach children a second language in a natural way through subject content instruction and everyday classroom conversation.

Program Implementation:

The Dual Language program was first implemented in the 2008-2009 school year at Carpenter Elementary in two Kindergarten classrooms. Each subsequent school year two classes were added to the program until we reached the goal of two classes in each grade level from K-5. In the 2012-2013 school year the Dual Language program was relocated to San Jacinto Elementary. Currently, the Dual Language program is offered at San Jacinto Elementary, Parkwood Elementary, Deepwater Elementary, Deepwater Junior, and Deer Park Junior High.

Commitment to the Program:

Participation in the dual language program requires parents to commit student participation through the fifth grade in order to develop bilingualism. Parents must also commit to attending scheduled parent education workshops on dual language programs, encouraging your children's appreciation for language and literacy development in two languages. Parents will need to ensure that their child does not have excessive absences, behavior referrals or unsatisfactory grades.
